The Environment

Pesticides can pose significant risks for wildlife. The pesticides you spray for other insects may kill beneficial bees and butterflies. They can also impact a birds’ ability to care for offspring, causing their young to die. Endocrine disrupting chemicals can also cause deformities in frogs. And those weed chemicals may kill flowers that bees rely on.

Chemicals sprayed in your yard can make their way to other places. Pesticides from your lawn may make their way to Lake Mendota, harming invertebrates and fish. They can also get into groundwater and contaminate our drinking supply. Another way that these chemicals can spread and cause harm is through volatilization - turning to gas or vapor after it has been sprayed.

Our Health

Not only are many pesticides and herbicides dangerous to the environment, they may also be hazardous to our health. Various pesticides have been linked to short- and long-term effects on human health, including elevated cancer risks and disruption of our reproductive, immune, and endocrine systems. Some of our most vulnerable residents, including children and pregnant mothers, may be particularly susceptible.
