Rain Barrels & Gardens

After the devastation that happened in our Village and the greater Madison area in 2018, I think we can all agree that we have a flooding problem. And due to climate change, extreme weather events, like those experienced in 2018, are happening more frequently. However, there are things that we can do to help keep rain on our own properties and help reduce the amount that flows into our streets and into our lakes.

Rain Barrels

Rain barrels are used to collect rain. They are typically placed at the bottom of downspouts to collect rain from roofs. The collected water can then be used to water gardens or even wash your car. For every inch of rain that falls on 1,000 square feet of roof, about 600 gallons of water can be collected. Ready-to-use rain barrels are available at many garden centers and home improvement stores. You can also make your own! You can find more information on how to create, install, and care for your rain barrel here.

Rain Gardens

Rain gardens are small, shallow areas filled with native plants that help capture rain water and reduce runoff. They are a great way to help protect our lakes. Rain gardens capture 30% more water than a regular lawn and filter that water into the ground. Plus, they are beautiful to behold and a great place for wildlife to live. If you take a walk around the Village, you’ll see many Village-installed rain gardens. Consider adding one to your own yard! More information on rain gardens is available here.
